Foxtrot:

Basic Step Footwork

The foxtrot follows a 6-count beat of "slow, slow, quick, quick." The quick counts are twice as fast as the slow counts. Since the dance follows a 4/4 meter, performing the slow, slow, quick, quick one time takes 1-1/2 measures. Consult the diagram below for more details about the basic step, sometimes called the "magic step."


MAN'S PART

The man's part (top picture), as with all steps, begins leading with the left foot. Trace each step through the diagram from numbers 1-8:

1) Forw L - Slow
2) Forw R - Slow
3) Side L - Quick
4) Close R - Quick

5) Back L - Slow
6) Back R - Slow
7) Side L - Quick
8) Close R - Quick

WOMAN'S PART

The woman's part (bottom picture), as with all steps, begins leading with the right foot. Trace each step through the diagram from numbers 1-8. Notice the steps are a mirror image of the man's part:

1) Back R - Slow
2) Back L - Slow

) Side R - Quick
4) Close L - Quick

5) Forw R - Slow
6) Forw L - Slow

) Side R - Quick
