Creative Dramas: Picture the Possibilities

Step 8: Provide clear transitions

Transitions involve a change in the context of a story. One common type of transition occurs when movers change how they act out the same identity. A more obvious transition occurs when the mover's identity changes, as exemplified when learners are asked to depict a variety of events at an amusement park. Movers may be asked to fill up as a helium balloon, spin like a ball being juggled, and twist and turn as a roller coaster. Transitioning from one role to another often requires a direct statement telling learners that their role is different. (i.e. "Now pretend you are a roller coaster. Twist and turn around a sharp curve.") Without a clear transition statement, learners continue to focus on their prior identity.
