Sculpture
Sculpture 1 is an introductory
level course designed to introduce the student to major physical and conceptual
aspects of making art in three dimensions. The course is project based
and studio intensive, structured around individual studio, requiring independent
research and analysis by the student.
Objectives
This course is designed to help the student:
Create and document a body
of work which is personal, dynamic, and relevant to your development as
an artist.
Develop personal themes and ideas in sculpture.
Progress in your ability to work on extended projects, and to understand
the problems associated with them.
Learn to use traditional
sculpting techniques
Research ideas in contemporary sculpture, and the artists who develop
them.
Relate your work to the larger art community
and document these connections.
Outline
& Objectives
The student should expect about 8 projects of 1-2 weeks duration over
the course of the semester. The majority of the work in the course is
completed independantly and evaluated in group critiques. It is expected
that the projects will be completed in a manner fitting a college art
course, with proper amounts of time invested, good construction of projects,
and appropriate research for each project. The projects will be considered
complete at the time of critique, and will be evaluated on their merits
at that point. A short rule of thumb might be no models, no excuses, no
substitutions. Projects not fully investigated will be returned to the
student to be reworked. The student is also expected to supply materials
for the projects, unless otherwise specifically stated by the instructor.
Your studio fees go to purchase tools and equipment for the studio and
for projects with specific required materials.
Grading
Grades will be based on the successful completion of the following criteria:
Completion of all individual projects, submitted on time for critiques.
A researched presentation of an assigned sculptor, and an exam of those
sculptors presented to the class.
The maintaining of an active sketchbook (8 1/2” x 11”min)
that includes:
