Bumbling Bounce
During a basketball game, Slippery Sam and Bobby Blamed both attempted to control a loose ball, but it went out of bounds. Before the whistle blew both players rose their hands with elbows bent as if to say, ‘I didn’t touch it.’ One official, standing behind Sam, saw Bobby touch the ball. However, Sam knew he touched the ball after Bobby. The other officials offerred no help. The ball was awarded to Sam’s team.

1. In Sam’s case, what values were displayed by raising hands in the air before the decision?

2.What values would have been displayed by acknowledging that he hit the ball last?

3. As Bobby’s coach, what values would have been displayed by protesting the call?

4. As the official, what values would have been displayed by changing the call if Sam indicated he touched it lastl?

You make the call!
