Peter Passed Critique
Peter, a fifth grader, ran the last leg of a relay for his team. He had a slim lead when he took the baton. Then he was passed and finished third. When you asked him why he was so quiet, he said: “I lost the relay for my team. We didn’t get a prize.”

1) Which building block of self-esteem do you believe would be most affected? Why? (recognizing that a combination of factors may come into play)

2) What would you specifically say to the student in response to the problem?

3) Which point on the "cycle of self-esteem" would your response most address?

Critique

1) Peter's sense of competence would be primarily affected, because he perceived he was responsible for his team losing, and getting a prize was based on ability or outcome.

2) Tell Peter that all anyone expects is that he tries his best.
Teach the principle that one runner, regardless when her turn occurs, does not determine the outcome of the race, just as one play does not determine the outcome of any contest.
Monitor relays based on the same time frame for all. Instead of ending a relay when all have a turn, keep all groups active until a signal ends activity.
Give prizes for participation and/or sportsmanship, as well as place.

3) Ideas could potentially break the cycle of low self-esteem by giving Peter positive reinforcement he wasn’t used to receiving.
