Society and Culture

Historically, there have typically been two types of culture within a society
 

1. Folk

grows out of the traditions of ordinary people

unknown artists

can spread to the community or even beyond

part of an oral, storytelling culture

often spontaneous

 
2. Elite/High

grows out of the traditions of skilled artists

known artists

can spread beyond the upper classes

part of an oral and written culture

often planned

 

INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION helps create a new third type of culture

 
3. Pop

grows out of the traditions of entertainers and corporations

known artists

must spread to large audiences (marketing)

part of a visual culture

planned, culture is a commodity

 
Questions we can ask about these cultures:

Who are the heroes/role models?

heroes of production vs. heroes of consumption

 

What are the impacts of pop culture?

historicity vs. fads

creativity

materialism

immediate gratification

 
How does Christianity fit with each culture?
