310K Small Group Project

Based upon the assigned communication technology, each group will have 30-35 minutes to give a presentation that describes the technology (its history, how it works, its current state of diffusion etc.) and explores its potential impact (how it has/might change the way we communicate or, how society functions). The Standage book on the telegraph provides some guidance in terms of content. Note how the Standage book describes the technology (discusses its history, how it works, its contemporary diffusion etc.) and explores its impact (real rather than potential given its historical nature impacting such areas of societal function such as news, politics, crime, relationships etc). Please note that I'm not expecting the same depth of information as Standage! Rather, Standage demonstrates the breadth of issues that could be addressed for any new communication technology. I will be giving a sample presentation that will also help you understand how to go about doing the project. Students are encouraged to be creative and to use more than one communication "technology" to present their topic. There is no requirement to turn in a paper.

The project grade will be based on both the quality of the presentation itself and the quality of the information in the presentation. Ability to address questions will also be considered. Thus, rehearse your presentation! Because this may very well be the only time we discuss each particular communication technology in class, I have high expectations for the presentations. I expect that each group will be a class "expert" for their technology. Thus, simply repeating the information in the Com Tech Update text will not suffice (the chapter for your com tech in the Update should be the launching pad for your presentation). Your group is encouraged to meet with me before your presentation. At our meeting you should have an outline (at minimum) of your presentation. At that time I will give constructive feedback.

On presentation days, those not presenting that day will be required to provide feedback. For each presentation identify 2 or 3 things the group did well and 2 or 3 things that could use improvement. I will collect them first, then pass on a summary to each group.

310K Large Group Project

Each group will prepare a presentation to give to the class during the final exam period. Each presentation should address the topic: what will com tech look like when my children (that's yours, not mine!) are in college? What are futurists/scholars predicting? What implications might you foresee? Forster's view is now 100 years out, I'm only asking you to look 20-25 years ahead!. The major grading criterion will be the content of the presentation rather than the presentation style. Each group will have a maximum of 20 minutes to present and explain their content. Take a serious look at the future but also have some FUN!

The two group projects assess course objectives 1, 2, 5, 6 and K-tag objective 5.
