Anthology of the American Hymn-Tune Repertory
Tune name: Antioch (Joy to the World)
Composer: "Arranged from Handel" by Lowell Mason
First appearance: Lowell Mason, The Modern Psalmist, Boston 1839
Source of this image: Lowell Mason, The National Psalmist, Boston 1848
The melody is in the part just above the bass. Mason insisted that the melody should be sung by treble voices when sung by the choir. Male congregants may sing melody. The top line is sung by tenors. (See the interesting note at bottom of the page.)

*This tune is republished from "Carmina Sacra," though, as is believed, in an improved form. It has been very popular for Choir and Singing School practice, to which is should, perhaps be principally confined, since it cannot be appropriate to many Psalms, Hymns, or to the ordinary circumstances of Public Worship.
