OT641 - HEBREW EXEGESIS: PROPHETS

Description

Hebrew Exegesis is designed to build on the Hebrew Language course sequence. Its goal is to amplify the benefits of learning and using biblical Hebrew by enhancing one's vocabulary and understanding of Hebrew syntax. The course provides practice of principles and methods of interpreting the Hebrew Bible. The focus is on exposition with an aim to apply the meaning of the text to personal spiritual development, doing "real-time" theology, teaching and preaching. Prerequisite: OT521, OT522 and OT531. Four hours.

Perspective

At Bethel, we believe that the Bible is the Word of God, fully inspired & without error in the original manuscripts, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, & that it has supreme authority in all matters of faith & conduct. The normative role of Scripture in the faith community calls for careful reading of the text (exegesis) as well as thoughtful reflection on the significance of the inspired teachings, the stories and the meditations of Scripture because the Scriptures are indeed effective in evangelizing and discipling (teaching, reproving, correcting and training in righteousness) and equipping a Christ-follower "for every good work." (2 Tim. 3:15-17)

Since we are working with an ancient, Oriental text, the student of Scripture needs to tend not only to matters such as the ancient author, text and the first audience of this revelation, but also to how these texts speak to subsequent readers/hearers from a variety of cultures located across more than two millennia.

Phase One: Pre-Intensives

We begin our project with a live webinar. Check Blackboard Announcements for dates and times.

The Webinar is designed to make connections at the outset of the term and get us off to a good start.

During these first four weeks of the term you get to build on what you learned in OT 501 and 502 as well as OT521, 522 and 531 using Chisolm's From Exegesis to Exposition

.

Phase Two: Intensives

During Intensive we get to roll up our sleeves and engage in face-to-face discussions of the material we have prepared during pre-intensives. Our purpose will be to build our facility in exegeting an ancient oriental text with a view to expounding it to various audiences.

We also get to develop greater familiarity with some of the key tools for exegeting and expounding

Phase Three: Post Intensives

Once intensives are over, we get to work on application of our exegetical skills to ministry situations. This will include thinking through how we might approach a quarter's worth of Bible teaching through an extended section of Scripture and then, focusing on one passage out of section, dig in to research the text and shape an exposition of that text.

You also get an opportunity to synthesize this work with the rest of your studies and contemporary ministry situations by means of an integration project.
