"Belonging to Berekyahu son of Neriyahu the scribe"

Previous | Home | Next

Berekyahu and its apocopated forms, berekyah and baruk, is fairly common in the Hebrew Bible. So it is significant when full names are recorded as Jeremiah does in referring to “Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah,” one of a notable family of Judah. This detail makes it almost certain that this bulla seal belonged to Jeremiah’s scribe.

Jer. 32:12 “and I gave the deed of purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the sight of Hanamel my uncle's son and in the sight of the witnesses who signed the deed of purchase, before all the Jews who were sitting in the court of the guard.”

Jer 36:4, 8 “Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote on a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD which He had spoken to him....Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading from the book the words of the LORD in the LORD'S house.”
