Lachish Letter #3Previous | Home | Next |

"Thy servant Hoshayahu has sent to inform my lord Ya'osh: May YHWH cause my lord to hear tidings of peace. ...And as for the letter of Tobiah, servant of the king, which came to Shallum son of Jaddua through the prophet, saying 'Beware!', thy servant hath sent it to my lord" Reference to a definite prophet known for his challenges to conventional wisdom points to Jer 29:1ff "Now these are the words of the letter which Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the rest of the elders of the exile, the priests, the prophets and all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon..." See also Jer. 42:1: " Then all the commanders of the forces, Johanan the son of Kareah, Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people both small and great approached..." While this is likely not the same person, the Lachish letter provides evidence of contemporary use of the name. ANET, 322 |
