Course Requirements

  1. Bible Memorization Quizzes
Isaiah 55:11 reads: "...so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it." Because God's Word is such a powerful agent of transformation in the life of the Christian disciple, Bible memorization quizzes will be a part of this course. Three of our class sessions will include Bible memorization quizzes on selected verses, and one of our class sessions will include a quiz on one of two options for extended Bible memorization. A guide sheet will be handed out to you with the key verses and the two extended Bible memorization options. You may take these Bible memorization quizzes based on either the NASB or the NIV translations of the Bible.(Click here for the Bible Memory Guide Sheet)
  2. Reading & Reflection
Students will be required to read two books (Don't Waste Your Life & The Adventure) and one article ("Are You A Missional Christian?"). A schedule of reading is listed in the course schedule. Students will need to keep up with reading in order to be able to engage in class discussion and in order to accomplish the required assessment/quizzes associated with the reading. In addition to this reading, selected portions of Money Management for College Students & LifeKeys will also be required. The course schedule will indicate which portions are to be read.
  3. Reading & Reflection Quiz & Exam
A "mid-quad" quiz will assess your comprehension of The Adventure and the Holistic Christian Model. Additionally, a Final Exam will assess your comprehension of all of the course reading (Don't Waste Your Life; The Adventure; "Are You A Missional Christian?"; Money Management; & LifeKeys).
  4. Journal of Personal Reflections
One of the spiritual disciplines that has blessed Christians over the centuries has been the practice of keeping a personal journal. Over the course of the student's time in Christian Discipleship, the student will keep a journal of his or her personal reflections. This is an opportunity to engage in a personal and meaningful reflection on the process of spiritual formation based on the course lectures, course reading, and other relevant personal study and reflection. The student will submit their personal reflections on four occasions. Each submission is to be 2-3 pages (typed) in length, and will be graded based on the length of the entry and the quality of the entry (i.e., Does the journal entry reflect an engaging of the topic in a personal and meaningful fashion?). The student may wish to journal in the form of a prayer to the Lord, or simply write his or her thoughts and feelings related to the topic of choice.
  5. Self-Selected Ministry Practice Assignment
    Option A - Personal Evangelism
Sharing the message of Jesus Christ with those who are not yet Christians is a central part of the Christian life. The first option in the ministry practice assignment will be for the student to share the good news of Jesus with someone who is not yet a Christian. The student may share the message of Jesus Christ with someone close to him or her (i.e., a friend, co-worker, family member, neighbor, etc.) or the student may choose to engage someone he or she has just met (i.e., someone at the mall, a park, the airport, on the bus, etc.). After sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with someone who is not yet a Christian, the student will write up a 1-2 page account of his or her experience with sharing the message of Jesus.
    Option B - Volunteer Service
Christian service is another central part of the Christian life. The second option in the ministry practice assignment will be for the student to volunteer a minimum of six hours of his or her time in ministry service during the quad. This may be at a nursing home, a homeless shelter, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, a local church, or another non-profit organization. After completing the six hours of Christian volunteer service, the student will write up a 2-3 page account of his or her experience in Christian volunteer service. * Please include a record of the dates and times you participated in the ministry service as an appendix to your paper.
  6. Attendance, Class Participation, & Seating
Because student participation will be an important part of the learning experience, attendance and class participation will be a part of the overall grade in the course. Students are permitted three unexcused absences without penalty. Only officially excused College events and extended illnesses are considered excused absences. Unexcused absences include sickness, car trouble, family or work obligations, previous class hour activities, etc. Students should be wise, using their unexcused absences only for real needs and emergencies. Each unexcused absence after four will lower the student's grade based on the following scale: 4th (-1% point), 5th (-2% points), & 6th (-3% points). Any student missing 7 classes or more, except for extended illness, will automatically fail the course. Due to the large size of the class, seating will be assigned. In order to prevent late students from disrupting class after it has begun, students must be in their seats at the start of class. No student may enter the class after the first five minutes of class without receiving prior permission from the instructor. If students miss class for any reason, they are responsible for all class notes and announcements. They are to receive such information from other students, not the instructor.
  7. Additional Course Information
Class behavior must be fitting for the college setting. Any actions or talking that may be distracting or disrespectful to other students or to the instructor are not permitted. Unresponsive offenders may be dismissed from that day's session or face course failure.
Cheating is not tolerated in any form. Any instance of cheating will result in immediate failure of the course. For more information, see the official College policy in the Student Handbook.
    Students with special needs
requiring learning assistance or accommodation must notify the instructor in writing before the end of the second week of the course. Students should identify their needs in order for the professor to assist them in their learning.
