This site has a good short article. It points out that trees in the city actually save the city governments and homeowners considerable amounts of money over the long run. The reason: Trees help reduce energy use and pollution damage.

Urban Community Development: description of the relationship between urban life, economic vitality and community diversity. It suggests some ways to improve the quality and safety of urban life. One specific point it suggests, which may be a source of funds for ultimately creating green space in Frogtown is through a valorun tax aimed at generating, in our case, green space. This works by freezing property taxes in the community and all new taxes arising from increased property values are used locally, entirely in the community in the community to subsidize this project.

These factors include competition, dominance and succession as these determine the general pattern of the community/city and the functional relation of each of the different areas to one another.
