Karen Horney (1885-1952)

ALL WORK ON THIS UNIT IS DUE MONDAY MARCH 7, BY 9:00 AM

As you will see in the powerpoint presentation, Karen Horney grew up in a conservative Christian environment, and the dynamics she describes may resonate with us: the idealized self, the despised self, the tyranny of the shoulds etc. So I hope you find her approach relevant to some of your experience.

Here are the tasks for this unit:

  1. Read Schultz Ch 4
  2. Take the chapter quiz (study guide also available)
  3. Read the powerpoint presentation also available in .html format
  4. In the "Karen Horney's relevance" discussion forum in Blackboard, answer the question: what TWO ideas of Karen Horney's do you find most applicable to Bethel students in general? Explain. Also, as usual, respond to the posting of at least one other student.
  5. In the course library section of the Blackboard course, there are three articles about Horney's theory. One deals with the "tyranny of the shoulds" and problems this may create in the work place, one, written by Marianne Horney, Karen's daughter, talks about the professional life dynamics of 3 generations (her mother's, herself, and her daughter), and finally, there is an article about a possible connection between Zen Buddhism and Karen Horney's understanding of the self. Choose at least one of this articles to read, and then....
  6. In the Karen Horney Articles discussion forum in Blackboard, reflect upon the main ideas of the article you read: what do you think of this, and how does it connect with your knowledge and experience. Also, as usual, respond to the posting of at least one other student.
